- August 17, 10.25 a.m.: Next newsupdate including travel information Leipzig-Dresden
will be posted here today at 1 p.m. If necessary, we will organize our own bus transfer from
Leipzig to Dresden Neustadt tomorrow, Sunday afternoon. Please, stay in contact with us.
- August 17, 9.15 a.m.: We have good news for you: all reliable sources confirm that
flood level in Dresden has reached its peak early in the morning and has been stable since.
Upstream in Schöna, water levels, finally start to fall which should affect Dresden around noon
today.
No damage to bridges has been reported. Roads to Dresden are open, including the Autobahns from
Leipzig and Berlin. So there is reason to expect that the situation is stable
and going back to normal slowly. Again: this concerns the city center, the only thing the
news reports show. At no point our hotel was in any danger as are large parts of Dresden.
Air Travel to Dresden: Yesterday there has been conflicting information in the news.
Generally, television reports are very poor, concentrating on sensations. Dresden airport
confirmed to us that (despite news reports) there were no restrictions to passanger flights
and none are expected. So everyone booked to Dresden should have a safe and impressive flight.
Train Travel to Dresden: Train connections from Berlin are functioning.
Trains from Leipzig were reported to be discontinued yesterday. Instead bus service from
Leipzig to Dresden Neustadt is established. We are still in the process of checking how
reliable this works today and will post news immediately if they become available.
- August 16, 3.30 p.m.: Flood level in Dresden has been slowly rising today, we hope
the peak will be reached today in the Evening. We are in steady contact with the Park Plaza
Hotel and the City Herberge. Both confirm that there is no problem there.
For us, the
main concern is that the Elbe bridges are closed for general traffic, pedestrians and
taxis are allowed through. There is no immediate danger, but police wants to limit
sightseeing and have fast access to all points.
Youth hostel: We ask you to first travel to the Park Plaza Hotel.
We have an option for reservations for all of you in the Park Plaza hotel during the whole
conference should the traffic to the youth hostel be restricted, so, please, don't worry.
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft has guaranteed to provide additional funds for russian,
Ukrainian and chechish colleagues for
that case. For all others we will have other support if necessary. So there will be no financial
problem for anybody. We will decide what to do at the registration on Sunday in the Park Plaza hotel.
Train travel: Deutsche Bahn has confirmed to us that transport between Leipzig and
Dresden works by bus shuttle service according to the normal ICE train times of line 9, Frankfurt-Dresden.
(realistically, you may expect a little less regularity though.)
Destination is train station Dresden Neustadt, close to the Park Plaza hotel, see below.
Travel by car: If you decide to go by car, please, contact me. According to the hotel,
there is no problem for hotel guests.
- August 16, 7.30 a.m.: Flood trouble in Dresden not over yet. Elbe level presently reached
an all time high. Again, this is not a threat for the workshop. However, it may affect thouse
staying in the
Youth hostel: presently, part of the bridges in central Dresden has been closed
for safety reasons. They are expected to reopen soon. Nevertheless, we ask you, after your
arrival, to travel immediately to the Park Plaza hotel (see below). There, you will receive
further information and assistance.
How to reach the Youth hostel: From Bahnhof Dresden Neustadt go to Albertplatz (400m).
Use tram 7 or 8 towards city center (Altstadt) and ride to Pirnaischer Platz (3 stops). Use the
tunnel under the broad street towards Lignerallee (see old map).
- August 15, 4 p.m.: Dresden is still alive
Train travel: Deutsche Bahn has established transport between Leipzig and
Dresden. First, there is
a bus shuttle service according to the normal ICE train times of line 9, Frankfurt-Dresden.
Second, there are lower priority trains (Regional express) running. Both end at train station
Dresden Neustadt, close to the new hotel (see below).
New hotel: The new conference venue and hotel for those booked to the artotel is
the Park Plaza hotel. All reservations are moved without change (in case of changes, notify us
promptly). The hotel guarantees the previous workshop schedule.
Hotel address: Königsbrücker Straße 121a, Dresden D-01099.(this is just north
of Stauffenberg-Allee)
Phone/Fax: +49(0)351-80630/-8063720
To reach the hotel by car: use Autobahn A4, exit Dresden Hellerau, drive towards
city center (Radeburger Strasse), after 1km turn left into Stauffenbergallee, after 2km turn
left into Königsbrücker Straße. The hotel is on the left side.
To reach the hotel from Bahnhof Dresden Neustadt: use the tram number 7 or 8. The tram
departs on Alberplatz, 400m from Bahnhof Dresden Neustadt, use a tram going North (away from
city center), i.e. towards Weixdorf (No. 7) or Hellerau (No. 8). Exit on Stauffenbergallee
(4 or 5 stops).
To reach the hotel from youth hostel City Herberge: Use tram 7 or 8, enter at
Pirnaischer Platz and drive in the direction of Albertplatz (3 stops),
i.e. towards Weixdorf (No. 7) or Hellerau (No. 8). Exit on Stauffenbergallee
(7 or 8 stops).
To reach the hotel from the air port: Use a taxi, distance is about 4km.
- August 15, 11 a.m.: I continue receiving e-mails confirming participation in the workshop.
Thanks to everybody!
New hotel: We are about to signing an agreement with a new hotel in Dresden Neustadt
which is located not far from the train station Dresden Neustadt, on the road to the airport.
This part of town is functioning normally. Taxi service from the airport will be easy.
Connections to the youth hostel will be convenient by tram.
Train travel: this appears to be the most serious question at the moment.
Travel from Frankfurt presently ends in Leipzig. No problems for travel from Berlin. We expect
that the railroad will establish a detour either through Berlin or an alternative road
between Berlin and Dresden. We will let you know as soon as possible. For those travelling Sunday,
we strongly recommend that you start early, as it will take longer than usually. We are presently
checking the option for a shuttle bus, e.g. from Leipzig Hauptbahnhof to Dresden.
Flood update:
Dresden is still expecting a big wave from the upper Elbe around 12:00 noon. But this will not
concern Dresden Neustadt and our workshop. Besides, most of the recent damage to the city center (including
artotel, Zwinger, Hauptbahnhof etc.) was not related to the Elbe at all, but to the (usually) tiny
river Weisseritz which carried mountain water from the Erzgebirge, but in the mean time has calmed
down again.
e-mail update: Next update will be mailed to everyone today in the afternoon.
- August 14: Despite Floodings in Dresden: the workshop will take place in Dresden!!
Schedule will remain the same:
Start of scientific program: Monday, August 19 around 8.30 a.m.
Registration and workshop dinner on Sunday, August 18,
End of scientific program: Thursday, August 22 around 4 p.m.
Optional program: Friday, August 23
There is no danger for the workshop participants. However, we will have
to avoid the city center and to change the workshop location (the artotel is flooded).
Also, you should expect travel delays, see below.
Flooding update: since August 13, there are heavy floodings of several
parts of town, at the South/West side of the Elbe river, including the historic Altstadt and
Dresden Friedrichstadt. Unfortunately, this concerns the historic city center and also the artotel.
While the water level has been decreasing during recent hours, new trouble is approaching
from the Chechish border. The situation is expected to relax towards the weekend.
Workshop accomodation:
The workshop organizers will take care of your reservations. We are negotiating with several hotels
in Dresden Neustadt (North/East of Elbe river), which is not affected by the floodings.
The new hotel, travel directions etc. will be announced August 15.
The youth hostel City Herberge is not affected by the floodings.
Travel to Dresden: There is no news about problems with air travel.
Train connections to the West (Leipzig, Frankfurt) are presently not working, but the situation
should improve by the weekend. Dresden Hauptbahnhof is not functioning at the moment, most likely,
travel will be redirected to Dresden Neustadt. New information becoming available will be posted at
this page immediately. In case the problems remain Sunday we will organize a bus transfer to
Dresden.
Those of you arriving Saturday, August 17, please, e-mail your arrival time/air port/Flight number
as soon as possible, so we can give you directions if necessary.
Travel by car : no serious problems. Expect some delays if you come via A4 from Chemnitz/Frankfurt
or from Leipzig. No problems for car travel from the North (Berlin) are known to us.
Participation update:
So far, everybody has confirmed his participation!. We look forward to seeing all of you in Dresden
and to have an excellent scientific program. Unfortunately, some losses to the cultural/art part are
unavoidable (we are particularly sorry for acompanying persons), but we will do everything to make
your stay in Dresden enjoyable.
